0:00If you remember the 1980s, you probably remember the anti-apartheid, or as it was called in the United States, the anti-apartheid movement.
0:09Apartheid was the long-standing system in South Africa in which the minority white population ran the political system.
0:18And to some extent, it was a system of separation, where in certain parts of the country, black populations lived in what were called townships and white populations lived in their own towns.
0:29And there was a legal separation between the groups.
0:31It was a kind of segregation.
0:33And as noted, it was longstanding.
0:35It went on for many decades.
0:37And in the United States, beginning in the 70s and then accelerating into the 1980s, it was extremely unpopular with activists, particularly on college campuses.
0:47So if you think about protests against this or that regime that have broken out over the last 20 years on campuses, Pek One, East Timur, Darfur, whatever campus advocates, activists, radicals are mad about, in the 1980s, they were mad about apartheid.
