0:00Welcome to Huberman Lab Essentials, where we revisit past episodes for the most potent and actionable science-based tools for mental health, physical health, and performance.
0:11I'm Andrew Huberman, and I'm a professor of neurobiology and ophthalmology at Stanford School of Medicine.

0:19Dr.
0:20Gina Poe, welcome.
0:21Thank you.
0:22I've really been looking forward to this conversation.
0:24I know that many people are going to be excited to learn about your work as it relates to sleep, as it relates to problem solving, creativity, and a number of other important topics.
0:34To start things off, I would love for you to educate us a bit about this thing that we are all familiar with and yet very few of us understand, which is sleep.
0:43Could you describe the various phases of sleep that exist, what distinguish them, and perhaps frame this within the context of what would a perfect night's sleep look like?
0:53All right, so sleep is really different from wakefulness and in fact can't be replaced by any state of wakefulness that we've been able to come up with so far.
